Whisnant Chapel Cross

STATUS: COMPLETE

Replacement of the finial cross on Whisnant Chapel at Lutheridge Camp and Conference Center after the damage from Hurricane Helene. Worked from concept sketches all the way to physical installation on this project.

After the historic Hurricane Helene passed through western NC and Camp Lutheridge I headed up with the Lutheridge Lumberjacks as the volunteer army to help with the clean up efforts

One of the days we were there we spent most of the day working up at the top of the hill near the Chapel and discovered that the central cross on the chapel had lost it cross beam in the storm and the vertical post didnt look to be too far away from falling too.

After seeing the state of the cross I wanted to do something about it. Especially considering the skills of the group with me and the other CTK “Woodpeckers” (woodworkers) in my congregation back home! So I started getting some ideas together to show the leaders at Lutheridge

Concepts for a replacement cross. Ideas ranged from direct replacements to possible additions to the design.

The Chosen Concept

This concept adds on to the base cross using both a inlayed ring and a central Luther-rose Medallion. While this adds complexity it was something I believed achievable especially using a CNC machine to cutout the the debossed Luther-rose design.

Now it was time to make it! That took me way longer than I meant it to but I kept progress going eventually…
